When I was in high school, I was a part of my school's FFA chapter. My sophomore year I was put in as the Vice-President because the current one had graduated earlier in the year. After getting some experience, I decided I was going to run for the President's position the following year.
I ran for president my junior year and won the election. I knew I had a lot of work ahead of me because we were rebuilding our chapter's participation in the community and of it's memebers. Our advisor, also our Agriculture teacher, Mr. Evan Babcock was new to our school my sophomore year, and the previous teacher wasn't as involved in FFA as him. Mr. Babcock wanted more out of the chapter and asked for my help in gaining new members into the chapter and retaining our standing members. I gladly took the job, and pursued it tenaciously. Throught the rest of that year the rest of the officer team and I focused on our community service participation and such. In the midst of doing that, I also attempted to get people excited about being in the FFA and helping others and learning what agriculture was all about.
I feel that year of high school was me at my best. Not only did I manage to retain our standing members but added many new ones as well. The Panorama FFA chapter was in the local newspapers a lot for the next year. One thing we did was we had an appreciation breakfast for our staff at our school. We continued that tradition through my senior year, and I believe they still do it. Now, I'm not taking credit for the breakfast idea, but I will take some credit for getting students involved in the chapter, the breakfast, and other things like parades and other service projects. It was a great year for me, my grades, my chapter, and my self-esteem. Mr. Babcock continues to brag about me a lot to this day. I just figured it was the right thing to do.
I will use what I did at "my best" in college by getting involved in things like my agriculture education club and hopefully even the hixson program. Hopefully this will help me through my first semester, and the rest of school. I want to be a big part of these things and people's lives. I enjoy helping others and hope to continue to do so throught college and the rest of my life.

You obviously have a lot of impact on people. I feel that people look up to you as for say a role model. You were able to start new things and gather new members to make FFA a bigger and better organization.
ReplyDeleteCongrads on winning the election. And though it may be slightly embrassing it is good to have someone so proud of you they are still bragging about it. I know that I always like it when people are proud of me even if I don't think that I did anything too spectacular.
ReplyDeleteI loved FFA! I was reporter my junior and senior years and took my book to state both year's placing 2nd each year. We also did a faculty breakfast every year I was in FFA! I feel FFA is a WONDERFUL way to help kids with community and with leadership. And to be a big part of rebuilding your program is a HUGE success. You should feel the utmost pride. I also think it is also awesome that you are going to be an ag teacher. There will be a great demand for them soon I know so it's great that some group will have you as their new leader. Keeep it up!
ReplyDeleteThat is cool that you were president. It's not easy to try and build a program back up, but congrats on doing it. I know how hard it is. This leadership will be invaluable in your future.
ReplyDeleteIt is great to read about ffa as your best moment. It is such a great organization and it seems you took advantage of it. I was also actively involved with my chapter and was secretary both my junior and senior year.
ReplyDeleteThat's awesome that you worked so hard to get all that done for your organization. I'm sure they are all very grateful for you as a leader for turning it around and making it so much better. Obviously they are if you're still getting bragged about!
ReplyDeleteI bet it feels great to build a program so much. I can relate because I really tried to build up the activities I did in high school a lot too, but it sounds like you did a fantastic job.
ReplyDeleteI wish I had the leadership qualities that you had/have! It's great to see people getting involved in good programs like the one you took over.
ReplyDeleteSetting up ways to get involved in the community is a great way to get involved and make a difference. Volunteerism is a selfless activity that will always gain admiration from everyone involved. A leadership position is a great way to show how much you care.

ReplyDeleteBeing my chapter's FFA vice president, I know where you are coming from in terms of community service and responsibility. I think it's activities like FFA that help mold us into the people we will become during college and even after. You should be proud of what you have accomplished.
ReplyDeleteYou are a great leader Zach. It is very tough to get other envolved and excited. Taking something and making it great is very rewarding.
ReplyDeleteCongrats on your position! It sounds like you put a lot of time and effort into something you were passionate about. The fact that you worked so hard to show the community what you wanted to accomplish is a feat in itself. Nice work!
ReplyDeleteI remember having to recruit members for my high schools Key Club. We got around 100 new members we were very exited but less than half of them ended up coming to the meetings. I think they only joined for the free dance tickets. :)
ReplyDelete"I enjoy helping others and hope to continue to do so throught college and the rest of my life."
ReplyDeleteYou bet.
